Rodney Lewis is a Principal and Co-Founder of Architects Lewis + Whitlock (ALW), a market-leading design firm based in Tallahassee. The firm’s award-winning work can be found throughout North and Central Florida, as well as South Georgia, with projects ranging in size and complexity from residential home designs to large commercial office buildings; from cultural and civic facilities to museums, churches, and innovation centers.
Rodney grew up in the Tallahassee area, and his love of art steered him into a creative field. His grandfathers were both carpenters, and many summer days on construction sites eventually encouraged him to combine his love of art with the built environment and solidified his career choice. Rodney graduated from Florida A&M University School of Architecture in 1992 and after working for other firms for eight years, he joined colleague Camden Whitlock to start something of their own. With a desire to create a positive work environment that would allow them to do what they love while fostering a spirit of camaraderie, cultivating talent, and engaging creativity, they started ALW in 2000.
Over the past 18 years, ALW has grown and expanded its reach, and the company is now poised to have an impact on key projects throughout the southeastern United States. On the subject of growth, Rodney says “ALW has assembled a tremendous team of creative problem solvers. We collaborate with our clients and seek creative solutions that grasp the essence of a project and result in all stakeholders having a sense of ownership.”
As one of the architectural visionaries behind many of his firm’s award-winning projects, Rodney is a recognized leader in both commercial and residential design. His dedication to thoughtful, forward-thinking, innovative architecture has set the pace for his firm’s collaborative atmosphere for nearly two decades.
In addition to his role at ALW, Rodney is a member of the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and sits on the Grow Business Committee and Business Environment sub-committee. He is a Board Member for Big Bend Habitat for Humanity, and a volunteer within the community for various organizations including Leon County Schools’ externship program. “Intern development is at the heart of a great educational experience, and ALW takes an active role in this practice,” Rodney says. The firm has maintained active partnerships for interns from Florida State University’s Interior Architecture Program and Florida A&M University’s Architecture Program.
Recently, ALW established the FAMU School of Architecture Annual Scholarship Program, an annual award given by the firm to support a 4th year student with the most outstanding design project at the end of the spring semester.
Outside the office, Rodney is an avid golfer, tennis player and trail rider. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Deon Lewis, of 28 years, and father of their two boys, Caleb and Skyler who also reside in Tallahassee.
