Skills-Based Hiring

What is Skills-Based Hiring?

Skills-Based Hiring is a talent recruitment strategy in which companies identify and evaluate skills and competencies to fill open positions, recognizing that pedigree is not the same as competency. This holistic process can reduce bias, add consistency and intentionality to the hiring process.

Why is Skills Based Hiring important?

In today’s economic climate, many businesses are struggling to retain, attract and promote employees. While sourcing talent is critical to a company’s operations, both employers and employees agree that traditional hiring processes do not work. In fact, some industry sectors are reportedly losing as much as 93% of the talent pool with such an approach. Skills-based hiring presents a different opportunity.

What Employers Are Saying

Peggy Gallant, Ausley McMullen – “When I first read the description of the “Skills Based Hiring” training I wasn’t certain it made sense to sign up. I thought we were already hiring that way and, could I justify the time away from the office? I am here to tell you it was one of the most informative and engaging training sessions I have ever participated in. I received countless suggestions on how to improve not only our hiring practices, but also our onboarding and retention efforts. We talked about best practices for the language in our new hire ads, the best interview questions to ask and the best ways to get the word out about our positions. There is so much more to say about what we accomplished and learned, but I’m trying to keep this concise. I highly recommend this course to anyone who is involved in any part of the hiring process or decision-making process. Corrie and Krista spent so much time making this a very worthwhile course and I’m extremely glad I attended.”

Ashely Leggett, Capital City Bank – “The Skills-Based Hiring (SBH) workshops, hosted by the Tallahassee Chamber and led by Krista Campbell, provided valuable insights for organizations already focused on SBH or looking to be more intentional about skills-based practices. The structured approach and attendee discussions introduced practical strategies to enhance hiring practices and associate development and career growth. Studies show skills-based practices helps find better-quality candidates and improve retention.”
