Tallahassee gains a renowned primary care sports medicine physician with the addition of Cameron D. Straughn, DO, CAQSM, to Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic (TOC). Dr. Straughn brings years of experience as a head team physician and a primary care sports medicine physician at prestigious universities. In a city with multiple nationally recognized college and university sports teams, as well as competitive youth sports teams, Dr. Straughn’s presence will help local athletes reach their full potential.
Dr. Straughn’s experience includes four years as lead team physician at James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Va., where he also served for a time as interim Director of Sports Medicine and the Associate Athletic Director. Prior to JMU, he spent a year at Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky where he completed his fellowship. He was the team physician for multiple sports there, while serving as the team physician for all varsity sports at Kentucky State and Georgetown College.
During his three years at Floyd Family Medicine Residency in Rome, Ga., he was the team physician for Shorter University’s men’s and women’s basketball and served as the primary physician for the Gulf South Conference Track meet. He also provided sideline coverage for several high school football programs and performed pre-participation school physicals for two years.
“I’m overjoyed to join TOC as part of the team behind the teams,” says Dr. Straughn. “My goal is to help athletes – and anyone who is interested in an active lifestyle – stay healthy and mobile throughout their lifespan. Sports and active living play a role in managing diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis… the list goes on. I look forward to becoming a part of the community and helping local athletes perform at their best.”
Dr. Straughn received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from James Madison University, graduating magna cum laude. Straughn completed his medical doctorate from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Virginia campus. He is a national member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, American Osteopathic Association and American Academy of Family Practice.
“TOC was founded 50 years ago as Tallahassee’s first sports medicine clinic devoted to providing top-quality orthopedic care to athletes,” says TOC CEO Michael Boblitz. “We carry that mission forward, reaching new heights in sports medicine care every day. Dr. Straughn’s addition strengthens our team of providers overseeing the care and well-being of our community.”
