October 19 marks the 75th anniversary of International Credit Union (ICU) Day®, a day that highlights the many ways credit unions across the world empower their members to pursue their financial goals. First Commerce joins more than 56,000 credit unions worldwide to recognize and celebrate ICU Day.
Credit unions were founded on the philosophy of “people helping people.” For more than 100 years, credit unions have opened doors to affordable financial products and services while continually striving to provide personalized service designed to meet the needs of the communities they serve.
“As a credit union serving more than 70,000 consumer and business members across North Florida and South Georgia, First Commerce has remained focused on empowering generations and transforming communities for more than 80 years,” said Cecilia Homison, First Commerce CEO. “I am incredibly proud of how our team members help empower members at every stage of life to reach their financial goals.”
In addition to supporting its members, First Commerce is actively engaged in the communities it serves through strategic partnerships, fundraising initiatives, sponsorships, and volunteer service hours. The #FlamingoChallenge is one example of an FCCU initiative currently underway during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This month-long campaign raises funds and awareness for local breast cancer patients by engaging friendly social media competition. Now in its fourth year, the #FlamingoChallenge has raised over $200,000, with every penny raised benefitting local cancer patients.
Additionally, when local businesses were struggling to keep their doors open during the pandemic, First Commerce gave its more than 200 team members money to spend with a local business to make a purchase and keep it or donate the item to an organization or individual in need. The #LocalStrong initiative grew into an international wave of support generating more than $1 million in support for local small businesses across the U.S. and Canada.
To help celebrate International ICU Day, First Commerce members are invited to share their positive stories about the credit union on social media and use #ICUDay and @FirstCommerceCU.
