Historic Landscapes: Planting a Mount Vernon Garden

Celebrate Earth Day with an America250 twist during a morning of horticultural-themed activities at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. Enjoy coffee and pastries while you learn about George Washington’s famous gardens at the Mount Vernon plantation. Spend time with UF/IFAS Leon County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers Susan Barnes and Tim Tankersley as they share how you might cultivate some of his favorite garden delights in North Florida. The event is free and open to the public. This program is part of The George Washington Experience, the Museum’s signature project for the America250 commemoration. Throughout 2026, key long-term and strategic investments will ensure an enduring symbol of our democracy is preserved for and made accessible to future Floridians. Be sure to view the Museum’s three-dimensional tactile portrait of George Washington now on display!
