TCC receives $10,000 grant from Truist to help Returning Citizens

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tallahassee Community College (TCC) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Truist Foundation. The grant will be used toward the college’s efforts to assist transitioning offenders (returning citizens) in partnership with the Florida Department of Correction (DOC). Currently, TCC operates a number of workforce programs throughout the region that include electrical, culinary, masonry, carpentry, HVAC and GED prep. The programs are located at the Jefferson Correctional Institution, Quincy Annex, Liberty Correctional, Taylor Correctional Annex and Gadsden Re-Entry.

“The generous grant award from Truist will afford us the opportunity to establish a pilot program, Hope ReImagined, that will provide transitional services for those returning back to their home community,” said Kimberly Moore, Vice President for Workforce Innovation and TCC2WORK/Be Essential. “By establishing this program coupled with the education that they are receiving while incarcerated, it will position them to become productive citizens while reducing risks of recidivism.”

Since launching the workforce training programs with DOC a couple of years ago, there have been over 800 industry recognized certifications awarded that lead to in-demand jobs. Therefore, it is critical that the job readiness support be made available so that the gains made by transitioning offenders do not end with their return back to their communities.

“We’re elated by our partnership with Tallahassee Community College,” said Chris Mills, Market President at Truist. “We’re proud to support their Workforce Innovation initiative to provide skills building to inmates who are soon set to reenter the labor market in our local communities. Our partnership with TCC to provide these essential skills to make a positive impact directly aligns with one of our main pillars of the Truist Foundation.”
