Chamber Advocacy Update – June 16, 2015

LOCAL GOVERNMENT UPDATES – June 16

As part of your Chamber Business Advocacy Committee’s goal of monitoring, informing, communicating and advocating on your behalf regarding important issues impacting local businesses, listed below are highlights for the upcoming local government meetings during the remainder of June.

Of particular interest are the workshops that both the City and County will be having this month to help craft their respective spending plans for FY 15/16 (which shall begin on October 1st).  Chamber representatives will participate in support of your business and joining with our partners toward enhancing our region’s economic climate.  Below you will find a brief description of those issues on the public agenda that you may find of special interest.

City of Tallahassee Commission Meeting (June 17th)

The next City of Tallahassee Commissioners regular meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17th at 4 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of City Hall.   Of particular note, earlier that same day (also in the Commission Chambers) will be the City’s budget planning workshop at 9 a.m. and a special celebration, open to the public, celebrating the City’s recent win as an “All-American City” at 3 p.m.  Additional information regarding all City agenda issues (such as those highlighted below) can be found in the full City agenda at:  http://www.boarddocs.com/fla/talgov/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=9W7K2G4DAD2C

Beyond the morning’s budget workshop, the City Commission has a few notable action items on the agenda that are of interest to the business community, including:

  • Item 13.01  Introduces a draft ordinance that would govern use of hiring private vehicles.  The much deliberated “Uber” laws have become a key issue for local and state governments across the US to navigate and this item presents Tallahassee’s attempt to manage that task.
  • A series of agenda items (Items 13.02 through 13.05) introducing ordinances relating to land use and zoning changes in districts across the City and may warrant Chamber member review based upon interest.
  • Item 14.03 presents staff ranking of private sector proposals to implement a new 10 Megawatt City Solar Farm to diversify the City’s acquisition of clean energy sources for electric utility customer use across the community.

Leon County Commission Meeting (June 23rd)

The next Leon County Commission regular meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, June 23rd at 3 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Leon County Courthouse.   While encompassed by a relatively brief agenda, additional information regarding all County agenda matters can be found in the full County agenda at:  http://cms.leoncountyfl.gov/coadmin/agenda/view2.asp?meeting_date=6/23/2015&item_type=0

Perhaps the most noteworthy item to be addressed by the County on the 23rd is an extensive workshop regarding their upcoming budget planning.  Extensive information regarding that workshop, which includes many different focus areas related to the broad revenue and expenditure plan for the upcoming fiscal year, can be located at:  http://cms.leoncountyfl.gov/coadmin/agenda/Workshops/ws120150623.pdf
