DISC Village invites the community to come together for its 2nd Annual Run for Recovery on Thursday, September 24, at Lake Ella in Tallahassee.
Held in recognition of National Recovery Month, the free, all-ages event celebrates individuals recovering from substance use disorders, including challenges involving opioids, alcohol and other substances, while connecting the community with treatment, recovery, and prevention resources.
Run for Recovery is designed to make recovery visible, supported and celebrated. Runners, walkers, families, friends, recovery supporters and community members of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. Attendees will have opportunities to connect with local organizations and resources while enjoying food available from food trucks throughout the evening. “When our community shows up for recovery, it sends a powerful message of hope that no one has to walk that journey alone. Run for Recovery brings people together to celebrate progress, strengthen connections, inspire hope, and build a community where recovery is recognized, supported, and celebrated,” said Jennifer Travieso, COO of DISC Village.
The event creates an opportunity for people who may be unfamiliar with substance use treatment to learn what recovery support can look like and where help is available. DISC Village provides services for individuals experiencing substance use disorders, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid and alcohol use disorder, residential treatment, outpatient treatment, peer support and other behavioral health services. These programs help individuals work toward greater stability, health and long-term recovery while providing support for families and communities.
National Recovery Month also highlights the importance of education and overdose prevention. DISC Village provides free Naloxone (Narcan) to the community. Naloxone (Narcan) can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, helping provide critical time for emergency medical care and another opportunity for an individual to reach recovery.
Run for Recovery gives the Big Bend Region a positive, welcoming space to learn, connect, and show support. For individuals in recovery, the event is a public reminder that their progress matters. For families and friends, it offers an opportunity to celebrate alongside the people they support. For the broader community, it provides greater awareness of substance use disorders, available treatment, and the role everyone can play in creating a community where people feel supported in seeking help.
