CEO Spotlight – Dr. Donald Parks, Flagler College Tallahassee

As Dean of Flagler College – Tallahassee (FCT), Dr. Donald K. Parks knows the importance of combining theory and practice to make education work for Tallahassee.

Like many FCT students, Donald worked his way up through the higher education ranks. As Resident Assistant at a freshman residence hall at Valdosta State University, he developed his passion for helping students succeed. He later accepted the position of Director of Cooperative Education (Co-Op) where he spent the next 16 years placing students in Co-Op jobs at businesses and government agencies along the East coast, giving them valuable work experience. Donald went on to earn his Doctorate of Education in Adult and Career Education, which ultimately brought him to Flagler College.

The Flagler College main campus was founded in 1968 in the historic city of St. Augustine, Florida as a memorial to Henry M. Flagler, an industrialist; oil magnate; philanthropist; land developer; and railroad pioneer. Flagler College – Tallahassee engages that same entrepreneurial spirit. Established in 2000 as a private-public partnership with Tallahassee Community College, FCT provides a quality education for students seeking bachelor’s degrees with proven marketability at the lowest net tuition in the Tallahassee area. The interaction between the faculty and students creates a powerful learning environment, with the FCT faculty bringing a wealth of real-world work experience, in addition to their academic training, to students who are driven to succeed.

And they do succeed! FCT Education majors, who gain practical experience starting in their first semester, excel in the classroom. Nearly 300 graduates of the FCT Education program teach in area schools and over 30 alumni have been named ‘Teacher of the Year’ since 2009. Accounting, Business, and Strategic Communication graduates earn leadership roles in business, not-for-profit organizations, and government agencies.

Donald credits the success of Flagler College-Tallahassee to the strong partnership with TCC, and the dedication of the FCT faculty, staff, and students. He states “our students never cease to amaze me. They are full-time employees, full-time students, and in many cases, full-time parents. They are a credit to TCC, to Flagler, and to our community!”

Donald personally teaches a Professional and Career Development Course that helps students identify their strengths, weaknesses, and encourages them to take the initiative they need to grow and succeed.

Donald is a proud father of four wonderful children and four grandchildren. He is active in the Rotary Club of Tallahassee where he has served as Sergeant-at-Arms and Foundation Chair, and is currently serving as President-Elect. He is also a Captain in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing effort, and is passionate about his work as a Reading Pal.
