CEO Spotlight – Doug Smith, Redwire

Being a Tallahassee native, Doug Smith believes in giving back to his community. Over the years, his community interests have included The United Way, Boy Scouts, Young Life to name a few.  His employees are encouraged to spend at least 20 hours of paid time participating in community causes and last year contributed time or money to over 40 organizations.

Doug has a BS, IDS Electrical Engineering and Business Management from Auburn University and is a five year participant in the Harvard Business School Executive Education President’s Program. Doug credits this experience as very beneficial in his career as an owner, operator or director of numerous business entities in electronic security, communications, computer technology, chemical manufacturing, and real estate.

Doug is an outdoor enthusiast who bills himself as a hunter, part-time timber farmer, fisherman, boater, backpacker and lousy golfer.  He particularly likes family activities that include Jill, his wife of 28 years, and his sons Andrew, who is an engineer with a defense contractor, and Wilson who is set to graduate with degrees in finance and marketing in 2015 and will work for a national construction firm.

Doug’s early career included stints at Datamaxx and Figg Engineering before he joined Sonitrol, led a management buyout of the local dealership and ultimately expanded his involvement in eight additional Sonitrol franchises.  He also started Redwire in late 2009 which operate in eight markets from Mobile to south Florida making his companies the 52nd largest non-public security group in the US

Throughout his career he has been recognized with many awards, some of the most notable ones include: FSU’s JMI Entrepreneur of the Year, two-time recipient of the SNDA World Class Award, and a ten-time recipient of Sonitrol Top Dealer Award.
