Local Business Saturday

JANUARY 2011 SPECIALS

In an effort to help revitalize our local economy, Tallahassee Mayor John Marks along with the City of Tallahassee, Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, Capital City Chamber of Commerce and local businesses have announced, that every second Saturday of the month in 2011 will be designated as a Local Business Saturday. This collaborative effort will include a targeted marketing campaign encouraging consumers to shop at locally-owned and locally-operated businesses for cost-saving deals beginning on Saturday, Jan. 15 and every second Saturday in 2011.

Locally owned businesses return about 70 percent of each dollar spent back into the community.

“I’m honored to partner with our area Chambers of Commerce and area businesses to help our residents save money through special cost saving deals,” said Mayor Marks. “Even more importantly, dollars spent in these businesses mean jobs in Tallahassee and is an investment in our schools and overall quality of life.”

While the community will realize the positive economic effects of this program, individuals will benefit by saving money when they cash in on the deals and incentives being offered.

“With shopping options that include home-shopping networks, mail-order catalogs and seemingly endless discount sites on the Internet, one may wonder why they should drive to a local store or order off a locally based website instead,” said Sue Dick, President of the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. “The answer is simple. Local businesses return more money back into the community, meaning a larger revenue base for local services, from schools and roads to public safety and community welfare.”

Many businesses have signed up to participate and some have already posted discounts on the Local Business Saturday’s  Facebook page. Locally owned business, Moore Consulting Group developed a branding model and logo for the initiative. A website hosted by a local business is in the works and will make it even easier for shoppers to find out about second Saturday savings being offered by local businesses.
