Family to Hold TCC Scholarship Fundraiser in Honor of Fallen Soldier

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 20, 2016) – The family of Pfc. Brandon Michael King will hold its sixth annual scholarship fundraiser Saturday, July 30, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Dogwood House located at 2552 Capital Circle Northeast in Tallahassee.

Brandon King was killed on July 14, 2010, during an attack by enemy forces at Combat Outpost Nolan, located in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The fundraiser supports a TCC scholarship fund named in his honor. The King family has raised $40,000 in scholarship monies over the past five years.

The family will award four scholarships this year. The first recipient is Nathaniel Carter Jones of Monticello, Fla. After earning an associate degree from TCC, Jones plans to transfer to a university to study electrical engineering.

The second scholarship will be awarded to Sarah Edwards from Crawfordville, Fla. Edwards dual enrolled at TCC as a high school senior and is working toward a nursing degree. After graduating from TCC, she plans to transfer to the University of South Florida to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist.

The third scholarship will be awarded to Briana Lynch, who also plans to enroll in TCC’s nursing program. She hopes to eventually earn a doctoral degree in nursing from Florida State University.

The fourth recipient is Dustin McDougald from Forsythe County, Ga. McDougald was in the U.S. Army from 2010 to 2014. He will be a sophomore this fall, with plans to study chemical engineering at one of Florida’s public universities after earning his associate degree at TCC.

Pfc. King’s mother, TCC alumna Freda King, established the scholarship in 2010 shortly after her son’s death. In 2013, Freda won a LeRoy Collins Distinguished Alumni Award from the Association of Florida Colleges.

Those unable to attend the fundraiser can make donations online at or by mailing a check to the TCC Foundation at 444 Appleyard Drive, Tallahassee, Fla., 32304, and designating the donation to the Brandon M. King Memorial Scholarship fund.
